Discover the heart of Umbria with this fascinating four-day tour, immersing yourself in the history, art and breathtaking landscapes of this land.
Day 1: Place of departure – Perugia – Deruta Torgiano
Group arrival in Perugia and tour of the Umbrian capital. Amidst the green Tiber Valley, not far from Lake Trasimeno climbed on a rugged hill whose hollowing and spreading out over long ridges. You can visit: the Piazza IV Novembre, the Fontana Maggiore, the Cathedral, the Palazzo dei Priori, the National Gallery of Umbria, Maestà delle Volte, the Rocca Paolina, the historic center.
Hotel accommodation and lunch. Afternoon visit to Deruta, a town famous for its ceramics, the production of which dates back to the 300s. The historic center on the hill has Roman origins.
Also worth seeing is the Museum of Ceramics, which displays interesting historical documentation, and the nearby Church of Our Lady of the Baths, secluded in a wooded corner and entirely covered in ex voto majolica from the 17th and 18th centuries.
A pottery workshop can be visited upon request.
Then on to Torgiano: founded by the Umbrians at the confluence of Chiascio and Tiber rivers. Locality known for its wine. In fact, the Palazzo Graziani – Baglioni (from the 1600s) houses the Longarotti Wine Museum: in numerous rooms, expertly set up, it illustrates technical, historical and artistic aspects and objects of daily use, as well as a rich wine library and documents from the 1500s, including documentation on the therapeutic use of wine.
Return to hotel, dinner and overnight stay.
Day 2: Assisi – Bevagna – Montefalco
Breakfast at hotel. Departure for Assisi (evocative itinerary for the beautiful hilly landscape, the ancient color of the centers and the memories that link this land to the events of St. Francis), visit to the city: the Basilica of St. Francis, Santa Chiara, San Ruffino, Piazza del Comune, the Rocca Maggiore. During the visit stop at a restaurant for lunch. Lunch at restaurant.
In the afternoon visit to Bevagna: founded by the Umbrians, it became a Roman municipality. Typical medieval urban structure, with conspicuous remains of Roman buildings: A theater, a temple, a mosaic of the baths. Worth visiting is the cathedral , dedicated to St. Michael the Archangel in the late 1200s, the Palazzo dei Consoli from the second half of the 1200s and rising up a flight of steps; the Town Hall, the Church of St. Sylvester.
Continue on to Montefalco nicknamed “the railing of Umbria” for its wide view of the entire valley. The medieval urban structure, protected by 14th-century walls. The central square of circular shape, evokes in the ancient name, a space for knightly tournaments. To visit: the Church of S. Illuminata from the late 1200s; the Town Hall, in whose library rare manuscripts are kept: the Church of S. Chiara da Montefalco.
Return to hotel, dinner and overnight stay.
Day 03: Spello – Trevi – Foligno
Breakfast at the hotel. Departure for Spello, already from the highway you can admire this wonderful town that stretches out on the gentler slope of Mount Subasio. Founded by the Umbrians, the perimeter bordered by Roman walls and towers. It was a Roman municipium. To visit: Roman Consular Gate, the 12th-century church of S. Maria Maggiore, famous Bella chapel with a rare Deruta majolica floor (met 1500). Also worth mentioning are the Church of St. Andrew, which houses a painting by Pinturicchio, the Town Hall, the Capuchin Arch.
Lunch at a restaurant.
In the afternoon excursion to Trevi. Of ancient Umbrian origin, with a Roman structure, it offers a spiral route because the city wall wraps around the hill like three circles centered on the acropolis. To visit: the Palace, Municipal, fourteenth century, the church of S. Emiliano of 1100, the theater Clitunno, the palace valenti with characteristic Arab doors. On the way back stop in Foligno, which has a beautiful historic center just restored after the ’97 earthquake. Sights: the 12th-century cathedral with its splendid Romanesque facades, the Trinci Palace, the church of Santa Maria Infraportas from the year 1000.
In the evening return to the hotel, dinner and overnight stay.
Day 4: Narni – Return
Breakfast at the hotel. Departure for Narni. Founded by the Umbrians and a Roman colony, a town on the steep cliff typically medieval. To visit: the town hall also known as the podestà: beautiful facade with loggia and the 13th-century cathedral. The Inquisition tribunal (entrance fee) in the basement of St. Dominic’s church is interesting.
Lunch at a restaurant.
Upon completion, commencement of the return journey with arrival at their locations in the evening
